Looking after your home

Saving energy

Using heating, lights and water has an impact on your finances. If you’re looking to cut your energy use and keep your bills down, check out the information below.

If you’re looking to save money, one of the changes you can make is to cut down on the amount of energy you use for lighting, heating and hot water. You can reduce your bills by switching energy supplier and by making lifestyle changes. You could end up saving up to £200 a year on your bills!

Switch energy supplier

Energy suppliers, who collect your heating and electricity payments, can often hike up prices without you realising. Changing who you pay for your energy – and the rate you pay with them – can have a big impact on your finances.

Most people are able to change supplier and tariff, even if you currently have a token, key or card meter.

The easiest way to find the best deal is to use price comparison sites – they can also help you through the process of switching. Search online for ‘how to switch energy suppliers’ to begin saving money.

Other ways to save

  • Check if you’re eligible for a Low Income Fixed Tariff (LIFT) scheme. This is a reduced rate on water bills that can be offered to customers who need financial assistance to pay their water charges, and ensures that your rates are more affordable. Find out if you’re eligible for Affinity Water’s LIFT scheme here.

  • Try to use less water. Have a shower instead of a bath, don’t leave taps running and only use your washing machine and dishwasher when you have a full load.

  • Use energy-saving light bulbs. They use 80% less electricity than a standard bulb, and last about ten times longer! Also, low-energy night lights for your children can reduce your electricity costs.

  • Turn the heating down by one degree – doing so can save you up to 10% a year on your heating bill.
